Stop by, Think again.

“Keep trying until you succeed.”
“Winners never quit!”
The above adages look very impressive when written, but aren’t actually very realistic. Let’s sit down and face the reality. Yes, it is said that Edison had failed thousands of times before he invented the light bulb; yes, it is true that one shouldn’t get disheartened by failures but it is also true that you should choose your goals wisely. I mean it definitely isn’t wise to sit on a chunk of coal and wait for it to transform into diamond just because you heard that diamond is just carbon which is placed under a lot of pressure! We need to keep trying, but not when the goal is something so unrealistic!

It is said that there’s an invisible thread that connects us to what we are destined to achieve. The thread may sometimes tangle, it may even stretch but it never breaks! What if that thread passes the top of a tall, thin wall (not even through it)  and you end up thinking that that wall is your destiny while it actually is just a signboard indicating that you’re moving towards the right direction? More often than never you’ll end up not being able to reach your destination because you were busy trying to climb the wall while you always had an option of passing through it! It is a simple human tendency to not look beyond something when you think that that specific object is your destiny.

Ever heard of the story of Dr. Harry Coover, the inventor of Super Glue?
In 1942 while attempting to formulate a material for clear plastic gun sights, he discovered a quick bonding adhesive which stuck to everything. Despite the potential uses of the product, it was not suitable for his current project so he disregarded the substance until he stumbled upon it again in 1951. Coover slapped a patent on his discovery, and in 1958, a full 16 years after he first got stuck, super glue was being sold on shelves.  Better late than never!

It is always better to stop by once in a while only to rethink your preferences and priorities, to check the achievability of your goals and to think about the options you have and their consequent effects on the journey towards your goal. It is okay to not be fixated on a single goal. In today’s world of constant change, it is hard to hold on to who and what you want to be and manage the complexity and unpredictability of life. It is the unpredictability hence unpreparedness which makes life so fragile, yet so beautiful. Hence it is good to acknowledge and embrace the changes you observe within yourself.

Life isn’t a simple highway, it has various turns. You will make mistakes, but you will also learn from them. “In order to rise from its own ashes, a phoenix must first burn.” All you need to do is to keep moving- you will have your own fears, you will suffer from undue pain, you will also have countless doubts, but keep moving. You just need to stop by at few traffic signals only to start again, with more energy, more awareness and less doubt..
